From Id to Intersubjectivity - Talking about the Talking Cure with Master Clinicians (Paperback): Dianna T. Kenny From Id to Intersubjectivity - Talking about the Talking Cure with Master Clinicians (Paperback)
Dianna T. Kenny
R1,394 Discovery Miles 13 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Psychoanalysis has moved a long way from the techniques of classical psychoanalysis, but these changes have not been understood or disseminated to the wider community. Even university scholars and students of psychology have an archetypal view of the original form of psychoanalysis and do not appreciate that major changes have occurred. This book commences with a detailed outline of the origins of psychoanalysis and an explanation of key terms which are often misinterpreted. The second chapter examines the changes that have occurred in theorizing and practice over the past 120 years and explores key developments. The following chapters contain an interview with a practitioner working in one of each of the four major branches of modern psychoanalysis object relations, attachment informed psychotherapy, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy, and relational and intersubjective theory. There follows textual, content, conceptual, and thematic analyses of the transcripts of interviews and commentaries on a therapy excerpt exploring commonalities and differences among these theoretical approaches. The book closes with a consideration of how these differences translate into clinical practice. This book aims to appeal to a wide audience, including clinical practitioners, students of psychology and psychotherapy, the informed lay public, and those thinking about commencing an analysis."

Children, Sexuality, and Child Sexual Abuse (Hardcover): Dianna T. Kenny Children, Sexuality, and Child Sexual Abuse (Hardcover)
Dianna T. Kenny
R4,144 Discovery Miles 41 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the past 20 years, the progressive uncovering of child sexual abuse in institutional settings has reverberated across the globe with simultaneous investigations across Europe and the English-speaking world. However, most books on child sexual abuse are narrowly focused and do not situate this most distressing of human behaviours within a social or historical context. Children, Sexuality, and Child Sexual Abuse examines child sexual abuse from a broader perspective in order to understand how and why child sexual abuse is perpetrated, by whom, under what circumstances, and with what societal consequences for victims and perpetrators. This book will be an essential reference for all those working in the field of child sexual abuse. Beginning with histories of childhood and sex, and their intersections, the book goes on to analyze sexual development, sexuality, and sexualized behaviour in children and adolescents. This is followed by an examination of the extent of child sexual abuse in the English-speaking world, including its prevalence in the Indigenous communities of Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and in once-trusted societal institutions including the Church, orphanages, and schools. The book focuses on issues of concern to all those who encounter the problem of child sexual abuse and addresses questions such as: How and when do children disclose child sexual abuse? What are the characteristics of memory that affect reporting? How are disclosure claims assessed? What are the effects of having experienced child sexual abuse? Finally, there is an examination of young people who offend sexually.

God, Freud and Religion - The origins of faith, fear and fundamentalism (Hardcover): Dianna T. Kenny God, Freud and Religion - The origins of faith, fear and fundamentalism (Hardcover)
Dianna T. Kenny
R5,330 Discovery Miles 53 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Choice Essential Read Did God create man or did man create God? In this book, Dianna Kenny examines religious belief through a variety of perspectives - psychoanalytic, cognitive, neuropsychological, sociological, historical and psychiatric - to provide a coherent account of why people might believe in God. She argues that psychoanalytic theory provides a fertile and creative approach to the study of religion that attempts to integrate religious belief with our innate human nature and developmental histories that have unfolded in the context of our socialization and cultural experiences. Freud argued that religion is so compelling because it solves the problems of our existence. It explains the origin of the universe, offers solace and protection from evil, and provides a blueprint about how we should live our lives, with just rewards for the righteous and due punishments for sinners and transgressors. Science, on the other hand, offers no such explanations about the universe or the meaning of our lives and no comfort for the unanswered longings of the human race. Is religion a form of wish-fulfilment, a collective delusion to which we cling as we try to fathom our place and purpose in the drama of cosmology? Can there be morality without faith? Are science and religion radically incompatible? What are the roots of fundamentalism and terror theology? These are some of the questions addressed in God, Freud and Religion, a book that will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychologists and psychotherapists, students of psychology, psychoanalysis, philosophy and theology and all those with an interest in religion and human behaviour. Dianna Kenny is Professor of Psychology at the University of Sydney, Australia. She is the author of over 200 publications, including six books.

Rhetoric in the Flesh - Trained Vision, Technical Expertise, and the Gross Anatomy Lab (Hardcover): T. Kenny Fountain Rhetoric in the Flesh - Trained Vision, Technical Expertise, and the Gross Anatomy Lab (Hardcover)
T. Kenny Fountain
R4,135 Discovery Miles 41 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rhetoric in the Flesh is the first book-length ethnographic study of the gross anatomy lab to explain how rhetorical discourses, multimodal displays, and embodied practices facilitate learning and technical expertise and how they shape participants' perceptions of the human body. By investigating the role that discourses, displays, and human bodies play in the training and socialization of medical students, T. Kenny Fountain contributes to our theoretical and practical understanding of the social factors that make rhetoric possible and material in technical domains. Thus, the book also explains how these displays, discourses, and practices lead to the trained perspective necessary for expertise. This trained vision is constructed over time through what Fountain terms embodied rhetorical action, an intertwining of body-object-environment that undergirds all scientific, medical, and technical work. This book will be valuable for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in technical and professional communication (technical communication theory and practice, visual or multimodal communication, medical technical communication) and rhetorical studies, including visual rhetoric, rhetoric of science, medical rhetoric, material rhetoric and embodiment, and ethnographic approaches to rhetoric.

The Nuts and Bolts of ICD Therapy (Paperback): T Kenny The Nuts and Bolts of ICD Therapy (Paperback)
T Kenny
R1,361 Discovery Miles 13 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The number of ICD patients is increasing sharply, yet the number of electrophysiologists--physicians who specialize in the electrical system of the heart--is not increasing as dramatically. The result of this influx is that more and more ICD patients are being treated by physicians and staff with little or no ICD training.

There are many fine books on device-based therapy for the heart, but most are written for the experts. Whether you read it from cover-to-cover or use it for reference (or both), it is written primarily with you in mind - for people who are actually involved in the clinical care of these patients.

"The Nuts and Bolts of ICD Therapy" is specifically written for non-cardiologists. This book is written in a lively intelligent and easy to navigate style. It emphasizes real-life clinical practice and practical tips, including illustrations from actual clinical settings. Each chapter concludes with a checklist of key points from each subject ("Nuts and Bolts").

The Nuts and Bolts of Paced ECG Interpretation (Paperback): T Kenny The Nuts and Bolts of Paced ECG Interpretation (Paperback)
T Kenny
R2,048 Discovery Miles 20 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nothing is more perplexing to the clinician new to device therapy than having to deal with cardiac electrocardiograms from a device patient. Pacemakers and other implantable cardiac rhythm management devices leave their "imprint" on ECGs and can significantly change what clinicians see - or expect to see. Evaluating paced ECGs can be challenging, yet nowhere is it taught in any sort of comprehensive manner.

Designed specifically for clinicians new to device therapy, "The Nuts and Bolts of Interpreting Paced ECGs and EGMs" offers practical, reliable and objective information on paced cardiac electrograms. Written in a lively, intelligent and easy to navigate style, emphasizing real-life clinical practice and practical tips, this book includes illustrated paced ECGs by skilled artists to help minimize "fuzzy" lines and emphasize key points. Each chapter concludes with a checklist of key points from each subject ("Nuts and Bolts").

Michael T. Kenny
R1,409 Discovery Miles 14 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

USSOCOM's effective execution of operational preparation of the environment (OPE) is a critical component in the strategy for winning the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). OPE is a series of activities that seek to enable future operations by allowing U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) personnel to enhance their situational awareness and understanding within an area of interest and improve operational responsiveness. Joint Publication 3-13 defines OPE as "non-intelligence activities conducted to plan and prepare for potential follow-on military operations" conducted under Title 10 authority. Through predictive analysis and preemptive action, the United States can identify potential terrorist support areas, enhance situational understanding of these regions, and set the conditions to find, fix, and finish terrorists in these locations as or even before they take root. Conducting OPE in concert with our host and partner nation allies in areas of current or potential future terrorist activity is the means by which we can unobtrusively enhance our situational understanding and expedite the targeting and destruction of terrorist networks. OPE does fulfill key requirements outlined in the various national strategies to include disrupting and destroying terrorist organizations of global reach, denying safe haven, sustaining our intelligence advantage, and posturing for strategic uncertainty. It is an excellent method of achieving situational awareness and understanding, extending operational reach and responsiveness, and ultimately shorting the time between find to finish. Maximizing the effectiveness of OPE in support of the GWOT will require the following measures. Although USSOCOM has in fact developed a comprehensive unconventional warfare campaign plan and an OPE planning framework it would benefit from having an OPE specific campaign plan that operationalizes OPE in an effort to both guide its conduct and synchronize its effects. A comprehensive OPE campaign plan would
